Eldorado

On this Sunday afternoon, while the COVID-19 virus is rising and rising to break on us like a gigantic wave in April of 2020, I think back to 171 years ago, when in April of 1849, Edgar Allan Poe published the poem Eldorado.
While this poems title promises the riches of the gold rush, and is a tale of a knight who gallantly sets out to reach them, it is also a much more melancholy, about seeking glory for one's whole life, and wondering where it is to be found near the end.
Jody Baly is a retired schoolteacher, living in San Mateo, California. Born a World War Two war baby in 1943, of a submarine commander in the Pacific. She taught third grade at Sunnybrae elementary school.
In 1970, she gave birth to another war baby, Dustin while living in San Diego. Dustin lived in two Eldorados. In the 1800's there were Eldorados In California, near Placerville, and another near Boulder Colorado. Many pieces of mail and many personal meetings were lost between Eldorodo Cal. and Eldorodo Col., until latter changed its name to Eldora. Eldora later became a ski resort, where Dustin later worked as a snowmaker. After that he moved with his wife to the other Eldorado, where the gold rush happened in California. Dustin and his wife Karen purchased a home together in Placerville, on a hill where placer minning was developed, washing down hillsides to pick up the giant nuggets of gold. Later, with their two children Alyssia and Corbin, they ended up moving back to San Diego.
